The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) serving as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) plays a vital role as an educator, advocate, and provider of care. This position is responsible for ensuring the health and well-being of patients within the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU APRN collaborates closely with physicians and an interdisciplinary team to manage and coordinate nursing and patient care at Eskenazi Health. Additionally, this role encompasses the delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, as well as ongoing evaluations, including pharmacologic interventions under a physician's guidance.
• Develop and implement comprehensive care plans that address the physical, emotional, and psychosocial needs of patients and their families.
• Act as an informative resource for patients, families, and healthcare staff.
• Make appropriate referrals to physicians and allied healthcare professionals as necessary.
• Maintain consistent communication with patients, families, and visitors to ensure their needs are met effectively.
• Collaborate daily with interdepartmental colleagues, including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and ancillary staff.
• Coordinate patient care across departments to ensure comprehensive service delivery.
• Supervise personnel directly, providing constructive feedback on performance and clinical competencies to both individuals and management.
• Report any equipment repair needs to the administration promptly.
• Demonstrated expertise in neonatal care.
• Possession of relevant specialty certification, when available.
• Special privileges to perform specific procedures, including:
o Chest tube placement and removal
o Endotracheal intubation - Fine needle aspiration
o Lumbar puncture
o Percutaneous venous catheter placement and removal - Umbilical vessel catheter placement and removal
